good to see this site still here, keeping the spirit of Kingmaker alive. Kingmaker were one of the most criminally underrated bands who got swept up in all that Britpop nonsense. I adored them!
I am actually in the process of writing a book about the Britpop era, and would love to get in touch with Loz to ask him his feelings about it all, if anyone could give me his email address, or a contact where he can be reached, I'd be most grateful.Thanks.

Just dug out Eat Yourself Whole. Sounds as good as it did back in 1992! What a discovery, only picked it up on a whim for 8 quid.

What a year 1991. Peggy Suicide (Julian Cope) and Eat Yourself Whole, two of my favourite albums of the entire 1990s both released. Add in Achtung Baby, Screamadelica and Slinky by the Milltown Bros and it starts looking like a golden age to me.

I saw Kingmaker only once at the Mean Fiddler in Harlesden I seem to remember. I was at least 10 or 12 years older than most of the crowd and got mistaken for their tour manager or something like that. Kids trying to persuade me to let them meet the band afterwards. It must have been the Hull accent or the fact me and my old mate Jon (where are you now?) were safely stood at the bar downing pints and keeping out of the way of the stage diving youngsters. It's the only time that confusion ever happened to me at a gig. A great atmosphere and a great memory.

Badly missed in these days of mediocrity.

As a Kingmaker fan in Holland, i never read whatever the UK press wrote about them back in the days. It is only now that i have found this site that i understand why they split up in the first place. Shame if you ask me...

Personally i think all three albums are equally brilliant, and i must admit i never noticed anything of the rec.co's influence on 'Sleepwalking'. I think it's sad they destroyed the bands love for those songs, because in the end, they are theirs and just as beautiful as the earlier ones (same goes for the third album)

Hope they are all doing well and thanks to the webmaster for keeping the world informed ;o)

Benjamin.

I was saddened but more shocked to see how badly shat on this band were by press and Chrysalis in their latter stages of existence.

As a local competitor in the Hull music scene, we were all jealous of these guys and even when we got to support them around the area, we had a strained / non-existent relationship. I could never trust Loz. We both had entered bands in a local talent contest, he said we were shit and sounded like Lloyd Cole (apparently). We said they were shit and sounded like U2 (definitely). I also harbour long-term suspicions, since High as a Kite had a very similar climax to the last song on our first EP. Paranoid obsessive at the time. Too much speed and LSD.

They became big stars, they did Top of the Pops (I think) and The Word. They had a very important friend in Steve Lamacq of the NME, who fucked off as soon as he could. I still feel that he must have been paid by their record company to eulogise in the way he did and then to stop writing about them so suddenly. I recall that twat claiming they were one of the great 3 pieces of rock, up there with The Jam. Over the top and too fast. This kind of nonesense was causing resentment from other music papers and from other bands, who would support Kingmaker and be completely ignored by this wnaker journalist, now big on Radio 1.

We could see after record number two, the EP with High as a Kite on it, that they were being squeezed to change their sound. In the Year and a half of ascent, they changed from sounding like U2 to Eat (also sadly disappeared after a superb debut) to The Wonder Stuff to nothing much at all.

If only Paul Jackson of the Adelphi had got them off on a different foot with a better record company, and they had been nurtured as an intelligent rock band, as were Radiohead, instead of thrust into inappropriate spotlights, they would have been much longer lived and well-known.

Still, they got their 15 minutes. Looking for Adam, Indigo Trashcan, The Mandelbrot Set, The Penny Candles, Pink Noise, Death by Milkfloat, The Hitchcoks, on the other hand, got nowhere.

Kingmaker were picked from a very strong local music scene in Hull at that time. As it was all kicking off, there were lots of why the type questions. But it became clear when their first EP came out. Freewheeling was (and is) a fantastic emotional and mature sounding song. High as a Kite was monstrous live.

They deserved to get where they did. But they did not deserve what quickly followed.

Why do Hull bands fuck it up? Red Guitars is another story from another era....

I met Loz in the Blue Lamp, Hull, 1993. Nice chap. The guy can't play darts for toffee. Nevermind, I forgave him cause he wrote Freewheeling. I feel there is nothing more satisfying than throwing yourself around a room to 'Really scrape the sky'. But i still think 'Playground brutality' is the best thing they've done. Well done to us for liking a band like Kingmaker. In the words of Bill Hicks 'Play from your fucking heart!!'. They did for the first few years anyway.

Ah, Kingmaker. Being at Uni in Hull 1992-95 meant they were easy to catch. A very good live band, although they did once play atrociously (possibly drunkenly) at a benefit gig for the Adelphi's Paul Jackson (benign father of the Hull music scene). Anyway, I digress. Fine, fine live band who had the unfortunate knack of choosing a succession of support acts who'd go on to much greater success. Sometimes life ain't fair. But they were good, and this very weekend I transfered some of their old stuff on to MiniDisc. They still have a place in my pocket.
Great site, too.

Wow! A Kingmaker website! And it's great!

'Eat Yourself Whole' was the first 'indie' album I listened to when I got to Upper School, and (along with Carter USM and Ned's Atomic Dustbin) helped lure me away from my former life as devotee of Simple Minds and Genesis and all that nice, grown-up Dadmusic which I'd thought was the be-all and end-all. I immediately bought a bass guitar and learned every part on the album, plus all the b-sides, and joined what was pretty much a Kingmaker tribute band called Delicacy. I was 13 at the time, and 9 years later I'm the singer in a band (called Miss Black America), and things are going rather well for us, partly because seeing what happened to the bands I loved like Kingmaker and Carter - which was heartbreaking, and still is, when you listen to brilliant songs like 'I'm In Love' and 'Broadmoor Hotel', which SO should have been on 'Sleepwalking' - has helped us avoid being royally fucked over the way they were.

Anyway, I don't know if any of the band ever read this, but I still think you rule, as do an amazing amount of people, really. And my band still bashes out 'Two Headed' of a Sunday lunchtime when we should be playing our own songs, and I still know all the basslines...

Before I go, does anyone know where I can get a copy of the Two Headed EP? I lost my copy 5 years ago and it's driving me insane.

To be honest looking for a Kingmaker site was a bit of a shot in the dark but i'm glad i looked.I only managed to see them three times but every time even towards the end when the crowd numbers showed they were on the way out, they were absolute quality. The 'rawness' of the music coupled with the honest, sometimes scathing lyrics made the band stand out.At the risk of sounding a bit of a muppet they will always remain in my memory as simply a superb band.

Aah, at last my browser found a Kingmaker site related to MUSIC AND NOT FUCKING CASTLES OR MANUFACTURING!!! Wow, at last, it's amazing.
Tried to set up an unofficial PRINTED Kingmaker fanzine once, and got loads of stuff from them for competitions and written interviews. All the people we tried to interview were too lazy though, so didn't get past issue one. I could try and dig out the old interviews and pictures they drew for us, and maybe you could feature them here.

They were surely one of the most under-rated bands of my formulative years. Loz hardy taught me real music was about lyrics and words, and not just about a tune...

Once, when I persuaded both eyes to peer in the same direction I saw, from the window of my North Cave newsagency, a young lad in his mothers Citroen AX (Miami, special edition) heading off with a guitar in his boot. "Marie", I said to my Daughter, "There goes a popstar, if I'm not mistaken". Right I was too! I could see even then that young Master Hardy was the man to take those Elastica's out of their muggery and bloody Jesus if he didn't even write them some songs... Heart of Gold that lad.

Now that Ian Cleary, bloody useless! I always said he's amount to nothing and where is he now, eh??? Couldn't get a job within a 50 mile radius they said ad they were right, happen he's fetched up in London or some nonsense.

Wasn't Ted Kay an early member of the Housemartins, Hull's other great band, from whom fat boy slim and the beautiful south arose (the latter of whom took the piss out of kingmaker for living in castles on the outskirts of hull?)
There should be a housemartins site!

I remember chasing down to Sydney Scarboro's for my virgin copy of Celebrated Working Man (Sacred Heart), my Waterproof EP was worn to death and we simply squealed with delight as Loz and Myles trod the hallowed corridors of South Hunsley.

Most Americans will know little about Hull. There's very little to know but maybe you should visit regardless. The Tower has a stripper on a Monday night and various drinks promotions.

It is very good to see a Kingmaker site on the web.

I want to know if anyone knows any members of Kingmaker
or has contact info for them, it's just I've spent the
past year making a video for Hey, Birdman in my local
(scummy) town, I thought it would be cool if anyone of
the band could see it. The would probably hate it, but
hey...

I cant believe that ive found this site. Kingmaker was my life when I was about 15-16. They had the original indie blueprint- i remeber seeing them inconcert a couple of times - They played at the Leeds Heineken festival with Elastica and later I saw them play with a 4th member - anyone rememebr him? Can't wait to hear these rare demos - but ive probably already got them cos i was obsessed at one point. Im alright now though!!! Well, sort of. Great site!

sorry there is no info about the album on Crunch at the moment - this was due to the xmas break - it will be rectified asap. Also due to a rather annoting technical problem the other two albums won't be up for a week or so. The Cd's Loz gave me 'won't rip into MP3 properly - as soon as this is sorted i'll get them on the site and let you know.. happy 2000

Wow,a Kingmaker site. Salvation!! I'm not, alone in this insane passion. Wonder if anyones knows where I could get hold of a copy of "Celebrated Working Man ep", have everything else. In the meantime a cultural reassessment is inevitable. Roll on the Kingmaker revival. (Considered setting up a Kingmaker covers band called Kingfaker but didn't think there would be enough demand)

by the way, I have all their stuff (singles and lp's) on vinyl/tape or cd (obviously) and while I don't fancy letting any of it out of my sight, I am happy to tape anything anyone may want - let me know either on julie@icas.co.uk or at home on julie@barrington-parry.freeserve.co.uk

also, if anyone picked up on Kinmgmaker care of The Wonderstuff, check out www.gigrecords.com for the latest news on Miles Hunt who is touring solo with a mix of old and new stuff. If you get a chance, go see him....it'll bring back memories!!

THIS IS TO ANSWER THE LAST TWO QUESTIONS:
I met my old roommate at the KOD, Kingmaker show. He was taking photos for a local rag. Met up with him recently and he is going to get me copies and wants me to inform everyone that he will sell copies for your flaming pleasure.

To answer the second question: I don't know about new copies, but there are definitely used copies to be had. Check the links on the front page at the bottom. I believe both have copies.

Will update the site soon. Promise.

Nice one- kingmaker were indeed a class band. I went to a Wonderstuff (have you heard much of their stuff?) concert at the G-Mex centre in Manchester (think its been renamed since then) about 7 or 8 years ago and Kingmaker were supporting them I'd never even heard of kingmaker until then but when the drums started up everyone was paying attention. Actually met up with a girl i'd met the previous summer whilst on holiday just by chance which was a bonus. Then bought Eat yourself whole. Now have lost it and am searching for a new copy which is how i ended up here. Can it still be bought new?
